Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of the god Shiva. The name also refers to the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance called Tandava. In every month of the luni-solar Hindu calendar, there is a Shivaratri – "night of Shiva" – on the day before new moon

What is Shivratri?

In the scriptures, Monday and Pradosh day is considered best for worshipping Lord Shiva. Shivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha every month. It is also called Pradosh. According to the Hindu calendar, Badi Shivaratri is celebrated when Pradosh falls in the month of Shravan. In this case, there are 12 Shivratri in a year. 

What is Mahashivratri?

The Shivaratri that falls on the Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna month is called Mahashivratri. This day is celebrated with pomp all over the country. According to Shiv Purana, the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalguna month is called Mahashivratri. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated to commemorate the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. That's why Shiva devotees consider this day to be very special.

Masimagam

Masi Magam, also known as Maasi Makam, is a Tamil Hindu festival which is celebrated by Tamil speaking people. It is celebrated in Tamil month Masi during Makam Nakshatra. Usually, Makam Nakshatra prevails during Pournami or full moon day but that is not always true. Hence Masi Makam observation is not linked with full moon or Pournami but with Magha Nakshatra. Makam Nakshatra is also known as Magam and Magha.

On Masi Magam day, temples idols are taken to the seashore, pond or lake for a ceremonial bath in a procession. The devotees who flock the procession take dips in the water body to get rid of their sins.

Mahamaham Tank is a huge temple tank located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. It is considered to be the foremost and one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu. The Masimaham festival held in the tank has 100,000 visitors and the once-in-12-year Mahamaham festival has close to 2 million visitors

Masi Magam is observed not only in India but also in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

Panguni Uthiram

Panguni Uthiram is an important day for Tamil Hindus. It is observed in Panguni month when Nakshatra Uthiram or Uttara Phalguni prevails. Panguni is the twelfth and last month in Tamil Calendar. Panguni month is known as Meena month in other solar calendars.

On this day Nakshatram Uthiram coincides with full moon and it is believed that most divine marriages took place on this day. The marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, Goddess Deivayanai and Lord Murugan, Goddess Sita and Lord Rama was conducted on Panguni Uthiram day.

As Sri Deivayanai married Lord Subramanya on this day, it is an important festival for Lord Subramanya devotees. On this day, devotees flock in hundreds to all Murugan temples. It is believed that Goddess Parvati in the form of Gowri married Lord Shiva in Kanchipuram and because of this belief this day is also celebrated as Gowri Kalyanam day.

This day is also known as Mahalakshmi Jayanti as on this day Goddess Mahalakshmi incarnated on the Earth during legendry churning of the Milky Ocean. Churning of Milky Ocean is also known as Ksheera Sagara Manthan. This day is also celebrated as Lord Ayyappan Jayanti. Lord Ayyappan was born due to union of Lord Shiva and Mohini, the female form of Lord Vishnu.

Thaipoosam

Thaipusam or Thai Poosam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community. It falls in Tamil Solar month Thai which is Solar month Makara in other Hindu calendars.

It is celebrated not only in countries where the Tamil community constitutes a majority but also in countries where Tamil communities are smaller such as Mauritius, Singapore and Malaysia. This festival is also referred to as Thaipooyam and Thaippooyam. This festival commemorates the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a Vel or spear so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadam.

Pongal Festival

Pongal is one of the most popular harvest festivals of South India, mainly of Tamil Nadu. Pongal falls in the mid-January every year and marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan - sun's journey northwards. Pongal festival lasts for four days. This four days long festival of Tamil Nadu is celebrated for showing gratitude to nature. The literal meaning of Pongal is "spilling over" and it had been named so, because of the tradition of boiling rice in a pot until it starts overflowing. Other traditions of the celebration include drawing of Kolam, swinging & cooking of delicious Pongal.

Pongal is an ancient festival of people in South India particularly Tamils. The history of the festival can be traced back to the Sangam Age i.e. 200 B.C. To 300 A.D. Although, Pongal originated as a Dravidian Harvest festival and has a mention in Sanskrit Puranas, historians identify the festival with the Thai Un and Thai Niradal which are believed to have been celebrated during the Sangam Age.
